The Administration settings are high-level preferences intended for network administrators, IT Technology Support departments, or operators with Administrator-level permissions; in other words, they are advanced settings used to configure your main Data Station (i.e. server) once and then be forgotten.

While every operator with the proper security permissions can access the Administration module, it contains settings that most operators won't be able to configure without help.

An operator's access to these settings is governed by the Data Station Management of your Security preferences.

  • Actions—This gear/cog icon contains administration-specific actions and other tools.
  • Check For Updates—This selection will immediately check for Alexandria updates from the update server. If an update is available, a description of the update is shown under the Release Notes selection. From there, you can choose to download and update your Alexandria Data Station or wait for a future date. Remember, always do an archive before doing an update to newer software.
  • Updates can be performed remotely by library administrators who do not have physical access to the server (i.e. installed Data Station). You do not need to be on the server to update; in fact, the only way you can access the Alexandria Check for Updates selection is via the Administration web module.


There are several ways you can perform software updates for Alexandria:

  1. If you are sure you want to update to the newest version of Alexandria, the easiest method is to select Check for Updates, located in the primary Actions (“”) menu of the Administration module.
  2. You can download the newest COMPanion and Alexandria software updates from the official website (http://www.goalexandria.com). Just follow the Support and Updates hyperlinks. You must enter your Alexandria registration name, email address, school/company and serial code in order to proceed with the download; these can be found on the registration letter you received when you purchased Alexandria or when you renewed your support contract. If you have accidentally misplaced your registration letter, COMPanion’s 24-hour Customer Support team will be able to assist you.
  3. For convenience, larger organizations may use Alexandria's Version Limiting service; contact your sales representative at (800) 347-6439 for information and pricing.
  4. If you don’t have a reliable internet connection (or are unable to download the newest updates), you can contact COMPanion (via email or Customer Support at 800-347-4942) and request that an Alexandria Update CD-ROM be sent to your location.
