What's New in Alexandria?

This update includes the groundwork for some exciting things in Alexandria’s future, along with several internal improvements and bug fixes. Check out the following:

  • Send Email. A new report to send an email to any selection of patrons.
  • Library Cards. Customize your Library Cards report to choose which data you want to show where.
  • Logo in Researcher. Add the logo of your organization to Researcher!

Important Information

  • Centralized Catalogs and the Union Site. The Union Site is the default site in a Centralized Catalog, which does not count as one of your licensed sites. The Union Site is a fallback site; for example, if you run an import for a site that doesn’t exist, those items or patrons will be assigned to the Union Site instead. It is meant to be a temporary location; you should reassign those items or patrons to the correct site as soon as possible. Any items assigned to the Union Site will be assigned an "In Processing" status. Run reports to see if you have any items or patrons assigned to the Union Site.

  • Default Images. Due to changes in how preferences are stored and accessed, the default patron and cover art images have been reset to their defaults. The ability to customize these will be returned in a later version. Note that this applies to defaults only; images specific to any patron or title have not been affected.

  • Leading Articles. Some users have observed titles sorting incorrectly with respect to leading articles. If you are experiencing this issue, run 'Maintenance' from Administration. This procedure can take a significant amount of time to complete so it is suggested that you perform such maintenance when system usage is low.

Self-Hosted Applications

  • Data folder. “Data” now contains a folder named with your serial number and all of your important files, including your database, logs, and operations files. Double check which folders you're backing up! We strongly recommend taking a moment to review Backing Up Your Data as part of this update.

  • Centralized Catalogs, Licensed Number of Sites. Ensure the sites in Sites Management do not exceed the licensed number. If your system is currently operating in excess of your registered limit you may be unable to gain full administrative access to some sites until your registration is corrected or unneeded sites are removed.

    • Corrected an issue which could cause reservations to be removed before their expiration date.

Export

    • Added a modification date selection to the patron export.

Import

    • Corrected an issue in the field mapping windows which could cause disabled fields to be incorrectly handled, importing regardless, and incorrectly aligned with the preceding field.

Management

    • Improved: Searching in Item Management now more closely matches searching in Researcher.
    • Improved: Management windows will now remember the last selected text field so that it will have focus the next time a search is invoked.
    • Improved: Restored the recently added and modified quick selection options.

Network Printer

    • Improved the secure configuration for the network printer to facilitate more reliable operation with all supported browsers on OSX, Windows, and iOS.

Reports

    • Added a customizable library cards report.
    • Added a report to send email to a selection of patrons.
    • Added a new Patron Credit Details report to aide librarians in identifying patrons with credit balances.
    • Added a new "Copies Serial Number" format to Loaned Items Information and Overdue Items Information reports.
    • Added an option to include patron pictures in the Patron Desk Reference report.
    • Added a new SIF Activity report.
    • Added an option to Include Cover Art on the Detailed format for all Title Information reports.
    • Improved the selections available for the Copy Usage Details report.
    • Improved the sort options available for patron and copy monthly usage reports.
    • Corrected an issue which caused titles to appear in all lowercase characters on various reports.
    • Corrected call number sorting on title and copy reports. Sorting by call number should follow shelf order: call number, author, title.
    • Corrected transposed grade and graduation date options on patron label and library cards reports.
    • Corrected an issue in which custom text would incorrectly print to skipped labels on some label reports.

Researcher

    • Added a Researcher Preference allowing administrators to specify a custom logo to be displayed in Researcher.
    • Corrected an issue which caused Explore Buttons to not display or disappear following a reload.
    • Corrected an issue which caused search results to not display fully.
    • Corrected an issue which caused causing the Share Title Link to not function in some browsers.

System

    • Various reliability and performance improvements.
    • Corrected an issue that prevented clipboard data from being pasted into the user interface.

Circulation

    • Improved: The borrowing patron is once again made current when an item they have on loan is scanned in checkout mode.

Import

    • Corrected an issue that could cause the sub-fields for repeatable tags to be combined under a single tag. Corrected an issue which was preventing updates for repeating saved import operations with a fixed file name.

Reports, Utilities, Export

    • Operations using adaptive dates can now be saved.

Search

    • Improved results for multi-term searches. By popular request, Series is no longer searched as part of a Title search. Series can be searched independently, and it continues to be included in Smart Search.
    • Improved the order of search results when sorted by relevance. More to come in future updates.

Site Management

    • The Site Usage Report is now labeled Site Record Counts. This report is used to identify the number of each type of record belonging to a site; it is not a statistical report.

System

    • Improvements to ensure that log files are automatically purged from the system after 365 days. This is necessary to avoid unnecessary bloat and disk usage.
    • Improvements to ensure that operation files are automatically purged from the system after 90 days. This is necessary to avoid unnecessary bloat and disk usage.
    • Bug fixes and various reliability and performance improvements.

User Interface

    • Improved tabbing in management windows.
