Series Cleanup
Tip for 11.12.18 Are your series sorting correctly in Researcher? If not, here are a few fixes you can make to your title records. Alex S Tips Search Series.png Standardize the series name Search results are sorted first by series name and then by volume number. So if you have Magic Tree House and Magic Tree House Series, all of the Magic Tree House volumes will be listed before the Magic Tree House Series volumes. An easy fix here is to make the series the same for all titles.…
You're Suspended
Tip for 11.05.18 Can’t charge fines? Want to encourage patrons to return items on time anyway? Maybe suspending borrowing privileges will do the trick. Alex S Tips Preferences Policies.png In Alexandria, you can set a number of days for which borrowing privileges would be forfeited per day an item is overdue. While not for everyone, it is a thought for solving the age-old problem of motivating patrons to return items on time.…
Styles!
Tip for 10.29.18 Did you know Alexandria version 7 has styles for Researcher interfaces? You can change the colors for Search, Scout, Slideshow, Status, Researcher, and Explore! Alex S Tips Status Account.png Go to Preferences > Researcher.  Select the module on the left. For this example, let’s look at Status. Change the Style dropdown menu to, for example, Mosaic. Save your change. Go to Patron Status to see the style! The Bubbly Ocean theme is only available for Scout, Slideshow,…
Tip for 10.22.18 When you receive a file of item records from the vendor, importing those records into Alexandria doesn’t need to be complicated. Follow these steps for a painless import process. Alex S Import Items Quick Settings.jpg Best practices We highly recommend that you run imports when Alexandria is not busy. Large imports could slow down your system. This also makes it easier to track down any problems later on, as it isolates activity during that time.…
Save paper—Email Receipts
Tip for 10.15.18 Do you prefer your receipt printed or emailed to you? Ask your patrons! Alex S Tips Circulation MakePayment.png In version 6: There isn't a specific email field for receipts. You know you can decide whom the emails are sent to, or for which patrons the report is reporting, in the Selections tab. But it’s still a generic message going to all of your patrons. Is there anything you can do to make it a little more personalized? Alex S Preferences Circulation Letters.png Absolutely!…
How much do I owe?
Tip for 10.01.18 "How much do I owe?" Thomas asks you at the circulation desk. How do you answer him? There are a few ways to find his account balance. First, scan his library card or enter his barcode in the command line to bring up his account in Circulation. Right there in the Current Patron pane, you'll see any charges he owes in red. In this example, you can see he owes $2.50—probably for overdue fines. Alex Circulation Chargestip.…

From where you are, type DL in the command line and <enter> to bring up a list of Damage Codes with predefined notes and fines. You can select a specific reason, or "Custom Damage".</enter>…
Keep Track of Tabs
Tip for 09.04.18 Did you know there are some browser extensions you can use to make your tabs stand out? Tabs allow you to browse multiple pages in a single browser window. There is usually a setting in your browser to open new pages as new windows or new tabs, and you can usually move windows into each other to group tabs. Different browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) use different methods to display tabs. The different browsers also allow extensions to spice-up your browsing experience.…
