What's New in Alexandria?
Get excited for these new features and improvements!
- Holds Management. We’ve added a new status for holds, so you can find holds that are On-Shelf (available) vs. In-Stock (in the holds area of your library). Centralized Catalogs will find that this new status dramatically improves the interlibrary hold and lending process.
- Suspended Holds. Patrons can now suspend their holds until a specified date.
- Charges. The Charges tab in Circulation is split into 2 subtabs: Charges, for all current and accruing charges; and History, for all past transactions. To ensure accurate records, Charges can not be edited, but they can still be forgiven!
- Email Receipts. On every Charge and Payment dialog, you can now choose to email the receipt instead of or in addition to printing it to a COMPanion Receipt Printer.
Important Information
- Import Settings. Due to internal changes and in preparation for a major update to item imports in 7.16.3, we have temporarily disabled the settings which allow for title updates during import. During this period we expect imports for the purpose of adding new titles or copies to function as expected. However, more complex import operations will be disallowed or may be unpredictable, such as those being performed for the purpose of modifying existing MARC data. COMPanion recommends that you perform testing in small batches before proceeding to modify large areas of your collection in this manner.
- Printers. Holds and monetary receipts are currently supported with the COMPanion Receipt Printer but are unable to be formatted for other printers. We are considering additional receipt formats to be made available in an upcoming maintenance release.
Updating Your Self-Hosted Application
New & Improved
Circulation
- Numerous improvements have been made throughout Circulation with all related windows and dialogs being updated accordingly. Where applicable, options have been added for suspending holds, designating a hold pickup location, emailing receipts, and so on.
- Titles without copies can now be brought current in the Circulation window.
- Copy Details now shows Due Date.
- Corrected an issue which could cause trailing barcode digits to be incorrectly dropped when scanned into circulation or self service.
Import
- Image Import now properly respects Patron and Item Import Security so that this capability is no longer limited to District Administrators.
- Corrected an issue that could cause some copy barcodes to be unnecessarily reassigned.
- Improved handling for tab-delimited files intended to update existing copies.
Interface
- Alexandria will now reuse existing browser tabs when possible. For example, if you click the Operation Management icon in the Reports window, and Operation Management is already open in a tab of the same browser window, then that tab will be brought to the foreground rather than a second instance of Operation Management opening in a new tab. NOTE: FireFox is not yet compatible with this change, but other supported browsers are, including Chrome and Safari.
Item Management
- A Copy List roll-down has been added to Item Management for quick copies reference. Access this list by clicking on the linked 'x of y copies' located under the cover art.
- Improved Call Number searching in both Item Management and Reports.
- The Sneak Peek Picture option now works correctly for items with 13 digit ISBN's.
- Alias is now displayed first in the Medium menu: Alias (Medium).
Preferences
- Security has been enhanced to offer better control over password strength requirements; choose from None, Weak, Regular, and Strong.
- A Switch Sites option has been added to preferences for centralized catalogs, so administrators can easily manage their settings for multiple sites without having to log out and back in between changes.
Reports
- Implemented an On-Shelf Holds report. This report should be ran daily to identify items which are available in your library but should be pulled and book-dropped to fill a hold either at your site, or at another site in a Centralized Catalog.
- It is now possible to select by both checkout date and due date in the Loaned Items Information report via the Patrons with Items Borrowed and Patrons with Items Due date selections.
- Enhanced patron reports with an Any option for the Status selection.
Researcher
- Patron Status has been enhanced to include more detailed current and historical charge and payment information.
- Patron Status now allows you to view your financial history separate from your borrowing history.
- Improved Patron Status with the capability to suspend holds.
- Added Series Volume (830v) to search results in /search. Series Title; Series Volume.
- Added Secondary Author (700a) to search results in /search.
- Corrected an issue which could cause errors when viewing very large Saved Lists.
Removed
Circulation
- A number of low usage Circulation Commands have been removed, including Restore Copy Policy, Restore Copy Site, Restore Patron Policy, Restore Patron Site.
- The concept of Accepted vs. Unaccepted Credits has been deprecated and all associated reports have been removed. Credits can be added for a patron, but they no longer have to be "accepted" as a separate action.

- Removed the Pull Pending Holds report. See the On-Shelf Holds report instead.
